Why Invitation to Create

In society today we strive to give our children a sterile environment for children. Perfectly clean spaces, spotless clothes, white walls, concrete slabs. We are illuminating the opportunities for children to get messy, make choices, and grow. As we eliminate the mistakes, the not so great choices, the messy globs of good we are eliminating tools our children need to survive when things don’t go as we plan. We are setting out to change this with the Invitation to Create movement.

Invitation to Create: Process art for the win.

Invitation to Create was new to me this year when Mother Goose Time introduced it. I was a bit nervous because we really loved the product based art they offered the year before. Once we dove in it was love. I love that they are less work for me. The kids love they have freedom to do whatever they want and all that is expected of them is to get creative and do what they want.

Mother Goose Time has met some resistance to this big change.  Everyone hates change. It takes time, to get used to the new changes that affect us. Like a child we stomp and throw a fit even if it is only in our heads, or is that just me?  This change is highly beneficial to children. If you are not using Mother Goose Time I suggest you add it to your home, school, daycare where ever you work with children your own or otherwise.

Create an open creative environment

I would like to share with you this quote from Leslie Falconer the CEO of Experience Early Learning the Parent Company of Mother Goose Time Preschool Curriculum.

along this process of learning how to create ideas and respond to the realities of our world (whether that be a simple photo on a table as preschoolers or a devastating natural disaster as an adult). I am passionate that the skills the children learn though these invitations to create, lay the groundwork for our next generation to see the world through eyes of hope as they look at whatever they have set in front of them either good or bad and know that they can confidently, resourcefully and intelligently respond to the situation with genius ideas that maybe no one else has ever dared to think but will help both themselves and others. Why should you try invitation to create? How process art can help prepare your child for the future.

Thank about this. Creating a sterile controlled environment for our children is limiting how they can learn to make choices and learn to deal with things not going the way they planned. Today I challenge you to give this process based art a try.

Great initiative. I feel like an a fish out of water so often with the things I let my kids do – messy, risky, crazy – you name it. It’s important for kids to learn confidence and independence.

I love this. So many kids hate when their art doesn’t look right or get frustrated when their doesn’t look like yours! They need to learn how to just go with their own flow!

Couldn’t agree with you more. I was always big on being crafty before kids. Then when I had 4 kids (triplets + 1 in a year) I knew I’d want to give my kids the tools to start creating.
