Essential oils aren’t meant to be consumed orally, and some are toxic. It is possible to experience the effects of aromatherapy by inhaling the oils and massaging the diluted oils into the skin. Most essential oils are considered to be very safe to use by most of the population.

A notable exception to this is essential oils that contain menthol, such as peppermint or spearmint oils. Adults can use these without any concerns, but young children and infants can breathe in these potentially harmful substances.
