We love unit studies. Right now smaller the unit the better because I am still in survival mode. While the older kids can work fairly independently with their Fun-schooling Homeschool Journals the littles need a bit more guidance and attention or nothing will get done with them running wild. The Grasshopper and the Ant is truly a great story for kids to learn. After all, anything with the moral of hard work pays off is good right?

Get an ant farm so you can watch the ants live and grow. We live the new gel farms are really cool to watch and allow your child to observe them up close and personal.

Watch the Disney version of The Grasshopper and the Ants
The Grasshopper and the Ant board game is a great addition to your day and can be used over and over again. Board games are great for teaching children to think analytically. This game teaches kids how stealing instead of doing the hard work can backfire. Hard work pays off.
The Ant and the Grasshopper Sensory Bin: I love to offer the children sensory bins to keep busy while I work one on one with each child. This bin contained corn, various things to use as scoops, a paper funnel, and the jar the popcorn came in. A small food storage container created a fun musical instrument. Little lamb just played and dumped the bin. Owl and Bear were “challenged” by me to get each piece of corn back into the jar when it was their turn working on motor skills and practicing finishing a cleanup job… Something we are working on with them.

Hop into this classic Aesop’s fable The grasshopper and the Ant. Younger kids can act out the story and practice math. Older kids can dive deeper into harvest and prepare for the future. A trip to your local farm to pick produce and learn hands-on about harvesting and food storage is a great way to help your child learn from this story in a new and exciting way.
