Flour is a staple ingredient in many recipes, from cakes to bread to pancakes. But what do you do when you run out of flour? Don’t worry, there are plenty of ingredients you can use as substitutes.

Never worry about not having what you need on hand for your recipe because there are some great options for using in place of flour and you can even turn things you have in your home already into flour for cooking and baking.

Simple substitutions for flour

If you need a substitution for flour these are some simple and effective options to make due if you run out of flour when you need it.

Cornmeal

Cornmeal is a great substitute for flour in recipes that call for a coarse texture, like cornbread. To substitute cornmeal for flour, use an equal amount of cornmeal in the recipe. Keep in mind that cornmeal has a stronger flavor than flour, so your recipe may have a slightly different taste.

Oat Flour

Oat flour is a gluten-free option that is easy to make at home. Simply blend oats in a food processor until they are finely ground. Use oat flour in place of flour in recipes like pancakes, muffins, and bread. Keep in mind that oat flour has a slightly sweet taste, so it may alter the taste of your recipe.

Make your own oat flour by placing your oats in a blender until you have a smooth powder. This is a great way to save money or simply use as a substitution for flour if you discover you have run out of flour in the middle of cooking or baking. 

Almond Flour

Almond flour is a popular gluten-free flour substitute that has a nutty flavor. It is made from finely ground almonds and can be used in recipes like pancakes, muffins, and bread. To substitute almond flour for flour, use an equal amount of almond flour in the recipe.

You can make your own almond flour by blending almonds into a powder. You can use ground almonds to make almond milk as well. 

Coconut Flour

Coconut flour is another gluten-free flour substitute that has a sweet and nutty flavor. It is high in fiber and can be used in recipes like cakes and cookies. To substitute coconut flour for flour, use 1/4 to 1/3 cup of coconut flour for every 1 cup of flour in the recipe.

Potato Starch

Potato starch is a great substitute for flour in recipes that call for a thickening agent, like gravies and sauces. To substitute potato starch for flour, use half as much potato starch as you would flour in the recipe. 

Rice Flour

Rice flour is a gluten-free flour substitute that has a slightly sweet taste. It can be used in recipes like pancakes, cakes, and cookies. To substitute rice flour for flour, use an equal amount of rice flour in the recipe. 

You can make your own rice flour by running dried rice through your blender or a grain mill to make a smooth flour that can be used as a substitute for flour or even as a thicker for soups and suaces. 

Tapioca Flour 

Tapioca flour is a starchy flour made from cassava root. It is often used as a thickener in recipes like pudding and pie filling. To substitute tapioca flour for flour, use an equal amount of tapioca flour in the recipe.

Chickpea Flour

Chickpea flour is a high-protein gluten-free flour that is often used in Indian cuisine. It can be used in recipes like pancakes and bread. To substitute chickpea flour for flour, use an equal amount of chickpea flour in the recipe.

Mashed Bananas

Mashed bananas are a great substitute for flour in recipes like pancakes and muffins. They will add natural sweetness and moisture to the recipe. To substitute mashed bananas for flour, use 3/4 cup of mashed bananas for every 1 cup of flour in the recipe.

Nut Butters

Nut butters like peanut butter or almond butter are a great substitute for flour in recipes like cookies and brownies. They will add nutty flavor and protein to the recipe. To substitute nut butter for flour, use 1 cup of nut butter for every 2 cups of flour in the recipe.
