Homemade French Fried Onions

October 4, 2016

When it comes to planning for the holiday’s small things can get overlooked on the grocery list. French fried onions for your green bean casserole or Philly Cheesesteak. If you’re like my kids they are good for just munching too. My family can be a bit on the odd side.

These are great for when you are planning a cookout on a budget or prepping for holiday dinners.

Make Homemade French Fried Onions

DIY French fried onions

We are lucky enough to have a deep fryer in the house but you can fry these up in a pan fairly easy.  I cooked ours a bit crispy because the kids like them that way but you can go as light or dark as you want. I recommend this old cooking tip from my Betty Crocker cookbook I had as a little girl. Place a match chemical side out in your teeth. The chemical will help stop the onion from making you cry.

What you need:

  • 1 fresh onion
  • frying oil
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

How to make homemade Frech Fried Onions yourself

Slice your onion into thin layers. Chop across the center to create slices of onion.

Place flour and salt into a bowl mixing well.

Place onion slices into four mixing well.

Drop into oil heated to 350 degrees. We use a deep fryer to make it easy but this will work in a pan for shallow frying.

Make your own french fried onions

Once they reach your desired crispiness pull them out and drain onto a napkin or paper towel.

Store in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to use.

These can have so many uses and are handy to keep around to add flavor to burgers, sandwiches, and casseroles. This is such a simple way to give your family something fresh and a higher quality than a canister of frenches french fried onions.

forgot to grab french fried onions? That's ok. Make your own.
