A French press coffee maker eliminates disposable coffee filters and single-use pods. This makes a French press a great eco-friendly coffee maker.

Another great eco-friendly feature is that the only energy required is that to heat your water. You never have to worry about leaving the jeep warm setting in for too long and burning your coffee.

How to make coffee in a French press

Start by heating your water. This can be done in an electric kettle, a stovetop tea kettle, or a simple pot on the stove.  For the best results aim for a water temperature of around 200 degrees.

While the water heats up add coffee grounds to your French press.

Add your water over the coffee beans and place the top on your French press without pushing it down.

Let sit for three to five minutes depending on how strong you like your coffee brew.

:: Rinse all of the parts thoroughly to remove any soap residue.

:: To remove any stubborn stains or odors, you can use a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar to scrub the inside of the carafe. Rinse well afterwards.

:: Dry all of the parts thoroughly before reassembling the French press.

:: Store the French press in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat to help keep it from molding or cracking when not in use.

Tips for the best french press coffee

Use fresh, coarsely ground coffee beans. French press coffee tastes best when made with freshly ground beans, as the flavor can become stale over time. Choose a coarse grind size, as finer grounds can pass through the filter and end up in your cup.

Use the right water temperature. Water that is too hot can scald the coffee and make it taste bitter, while water that is too cool will not extract all of the flavors from the beans. Aim for a water temperature of around 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Use the correct amount of coffee. A general rule of thumb is to use about 1 ounce (28 grams) of coffee per 4 ounces (120 ml) of water. Adjust the ratio to your taste preferences.

Steep the coffee for the right amount of time. French press coffee should steep for about 4 minutes. Any longer and it can become over-extracted and taste bitter.

Move the coffee immediately after brewing to your cup or a thermal coffee carafe. To prevent the coffee from becoming over-extracted and bitter, pour it out of the French press and into your cup as soon as it is finished brewing. Avoid letting it sit in the press for too long.
