Eric Carle Paper Plate Seahorse Craft

I just love Eric Carle books. They are fun, colorful, and full of things to learn. When it comes to children’s authors he is on the top of my list right up there with the Lovable Dr. Seuss. I jump on books from him when they land on the children’s reading lists. This month we are learning about baby animals and the day about Helper Dads uses the book, Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle. This invitation to create became an adorable paper plate seahorse craft.

Make your own Paper Plate Sea Horse

I love the planning Mother Goose Time puts into the lessons they send out. It amazes me to see the things they come up with. When we pulled out the items for this craft I wondered how it would work out but it did not look too messy for an indoor rainy day project.

What you need:

  • Background paper
  • Paper plate
  • Tissue paper squares
  • Glue
  • Scissors

The original plan from Mother Goose Time includes giving the kids paint. Right now the dining room table has a 4K TV sitting on it. Long story short painting at the table is a no go right now. So we modified it tp fit our needs and make it a project we could do away from the table.

I encouraged the children to cut shapes like a seahorse from the paper plate while I took the time to mix the school glue with a little water. After we were set the kids glued the seahorse shapes from the plate into place. They used the tissue paper squares to decorate the seahorse into many colors.

Lessons with the book Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle

I am so grateful that I ordered the board book for this one. It has some of the cutest cutouts filled with transparent paintings. I love the added lesson on camouflage in this one. Talk about this book with your child. If you have the board book discuss how different sea animals hide

:: I love the added lesson on camouflage in this one. Talk about this book with your child. If you have the board book discuss how different sea animals hide themselves by blending in with their surroundings. Talk about how each Helper Dad takes care of their babies. There was a ton of uproar here over one fish storing eggs in his mouth.

:: Discuss with your child why all of the helper dads are very happy and excited to be doing their part in raising new babies.
Don’t have a copy of the book? That’s OK check out this YouTube video.
