Essential Oils For a Clean Home

January 12, 2017

Spring is coming and I have found myself in a spring cleaning mood. Yesterday’s warm and rainy day was just perfect for throwing open some windows and letting the cool fresh air in while I clean. Essential oils are a great way to naturally clean your home and make it smell great.  Here are some great ways to use essential oils for a clean home and our top picks on oils or cleaning.

Homemade cleaners for your home

All-purpose cleaner is perfect for creating a fresh clean home. Mix alcohol with your choice of essential oils, add-in 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup water. Store in a spray bottle and shake well.

Homemade hand soap is easy to make in an old foaming hand soap pump. Mix 1 part castile soap, with 1 part water, and a few drops of your favorite essential oils.

Linen spray is a breeze to make. Fill a spray bottle with 1 tablespoon witch hazel, 10-20 drops essential oil, and top off with water.

Make your own carpet powder. Fill a shaker bottle with baking soda leaving 1-inch head space. Add 20-30 drops of essential oils and shake well. Sprinkle onto carpet, let sit for 30 minutes, and vacuum up.

Lemon has a fresh scent we often think of as well clean. Lemon is known to kill germs but did you know you can use it to get rid of spiders as well? Spray, defuse or put several drops of this essential oil on cotton balls in all of those spots creepy crawly 8 legged creatures live and watch them move out to escape the taste of this oil. (Hint mix in witch hazel and spray along door and window frames. Spiders taste with their feet and hate the taste of Lemon.

Tea Tree this oil is the go-to for quick easy disinfectants and mold killing. Defuse to kill mold in the air, spray AC filters to kill mold as it circulates and mix into your cleaners you use in places like the refrigerator. Tea tree is the MVP of essential oils for a clean home.

Thieves this germ killing powerhouse is a key player in our home. The truth is I can not keep the house as spotless as I would like after all who with four kids home all day can.  This oil allows me to make a great disinfectant a that I can use around the house. It kills germs just as well as bleach but without the strong chemicals. I prefer Plant therapy Germ Fighter.

Lavender is a classic for freshening the air. A few drops mixed with a bit of witch hazel added to a solution of water and baking soda or vinegar makes a great homemade fabric and air refresher.  While you’re at it put this one in your medicine cabinet Lavender essential oil is so valuable. Cleaning is just one of the amazing uses for lavender.

Citrus I really like Citrus Burst by plant therapy it has Pink Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Litsea, Mandarin and Sweet Orange all together giving an uplifting scent to our home that is very fitting living near the orange groves.  This blend is great for removing stubborn odors and for waking you up. Another great citrus option is sweat orange oil on its own. This works like lemon for cleaning.

Peppermint Is a key oil for personal use and makes a great air cleaner. Use peppermint essential
oil for a clean smelling home.
