Making your own garlic bread to serve with inexpensive meals is a great way to save money and make meals more filling. Garlic bread will go with most meals not just the classic pasta and helps to get more immune-boosting foods like garlic into your family’s diet.
What you need to make garlic bread
:: 1/2 cup butter melted
:: 3-4 cloves minced garlic or 2/3 powdered garlic
:: 1 1/2 tablespoon ground parsley
:: 1 loaf of bread
How to make garlic bread
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
To make your own garlic bread you can use minced fresh garlic or use powdered garlic depending on what you have available.
Minced garlic will give you little chunks of garlic bursting with flavor while powdered will give you an even flavor.
Mix your choice of garlic into melted butter folding until evenly blended.
Cut bread in half lengthwise. If the full-length french bread loaf does not fit on your cookie sheet cut each half in half at the center to make smaller sections.
Place bread on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Brush garlic butter onto the bread evenly.
Lightly sprinkle with parsley or garlic salt with parsley.
Once your garlic bread is prepared, place it on the oven middle rack to cook for 8 minutes. Switch to the broiler for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
Allow it to cool slightly before cutting into slices.
The best bread for garlic bread
For garlic bread, I love to use day-old bread or the bread loaves that are on clearance at Walmart or Kroger from the bakery. These cost well under a dollar and come in a variety from french bread to Italian. This is a great way to save money. You can even store these in the freezer until you are ready.
Of course, you can opt to make your own homemade bread to use for garlic bread or make what I call poor man’s garlic bread which is using sandwich bread to make garlic bread. This can be handy for serving as well as a great way to use up bread that is going stale to reduce food waste.
