Make Your Own Loofah Soap Bar
Natural homegrown loofahs are a great alternative to plastic bath scrubbers that are not recyclable. Of course, you don’t have to grow your own loofah. You can find plenty of them online.
Loofahs make a great addition to soaps because they allow you to use your bar soap to exfoliate while you wash without adding more plastic waste. You can make these for your own home use or turn them into great holiday gifts.
This basic homemade soap recipe using a simple melt and pour soap base so anyone can make it. You can change it up by using different soap bases and different additions to the soap making a point to keep the basic dried loofah in the center. Let’s talk about what you can add to your loofah soap bar.
What type of soap base should you use for loofah bar soap?
The soap base of your choice can vary. For this post, I went with a clear glycerin soap base that allows you to see the inside of the soap. This is great if you want the loofah to stand out front and center.
I personally love goat’s milk soap base or shea butter soap base. While you can not see the loofah inside the bar soap this way these make great moisturizing soaps that leave your skin soft and supple after your shower.
The best essential oils for making loofah soap
Lavender – Lavender makes a great essential oil for soaps that will be used on someone with sensitive skin. Lavender is relaxing and great for helping improve sleep.
Mandarin – Mandarin makes a fun and invigorating soap for morning showers while still helping to relieve stress and aid in relaxation before bed.
Sandlewood – Sandlewood gives a great earthly fragrance that is loved by both men and women. This is a great option for grounding and centering, this essential oil is perfect for making soap to help relieve stress.
Patuolli – This deep flower essential oil is often used for its ability to reduce stess, relax the body, and even act as an aphrodisiac.
What you need to make your own loofah soap bars:
- ¾ lb soap base of your choice
- Oval soap mold
- Loofah
- Sharp knife
- Microwave safe spouted measuring cup
- Wooden craft stick for stirring
- Essential oil of choice (optional)
- Dried herbs (optional)
How to make your own loofah soap bar
Cut your soap base into 1-inch cubes and place into a microwave-safe glass measuring cup.
Heat in the microwave on high for 30 seconds, remove, and stir. Heat for additional 30-second increments, stirring between each heating session, until fully melted.
Cut the loofah into 4 slices.
Place one loofah slice into each mold cavity, turning so that it fits best.
Pour soap over loofah to fill the mold. You will need to push the loofah down with the craft stick a bit, as it will try floating to the top.
Allow soap to set for 2 hours.
