Adding Pudding to Cake Mix: The Secret to Moist and Flavorful Cakes

February 4, 2025

I love having homemade cake and use a base cake recipe to flavor different cakes all the time but when I find clearance cake mixes I snag them up to help save time or even give the kids something they can whip up themselves. We add pudding to the cake mix to change the flavor and texture depending on our goals.

As a busy mom who loves baking, I’m always on the lookout for quick and easy ways to make delicious desserts. One trick that I’ve found to be a game-changer is adding pudding to cake mix. It not only adds extra flavor and moisture to the cake, but it also makes it more stable and less likely to crumble.

This is one of my favorite tricks to improve a cheap box of cake mix or take homemade cakes up a notch. Another great idea is to substitute the oil in your cake mix to make your cake so much better.

Why Add Pudding Mix To Cake Mix?

Pudding mix is the secret ingredient that can take your cakes from ordinary to extraordinary. Adding pudding mix to cake mix improves the texture and moistness of the cake, making it denser and more delicious. The pudding mix also adds extra flavor to the cake, which can be especially helpful when using a cheap boxed cake mix.

Best Pudding Mixes for Cake Mix

In my own baking journey, I’ve discovered that joining the right cake mix with the perfect pudding mix can result in an extraordinary dessert. As one example – Betty Crocker’s classic yellow cake mix paired with Jell-O’s instant vanilla pudding mix has become my kitchen staple. The result is a cake that boasts a moist texture and rich flavor.

On a more adventurous note, I once paired Duncan Hines Devil’s Food Cake Mix with Dove dark chocolate pudding. The outcome was well worth it – an intensely chocolatey and incredibly moist cake that still lingers in my memory.

Chocolate Pudding Mix – perfect for chocolate cakes, this mix adds extra richness and depth of flavor to the cake.

Vanilla Pudding Mix – a classic choice, vanilla pudding mix adds a subtle sweetness and creaminess to the cake.

Butterscotch Pudding Mix – great for fall cakes or spice cakes, butterscotch pudding mix adds a warm and cozy flavor to the cake.

Lemon Pudding Mix – if you’re making a lemon cake, adding lemon pudding mix will intensify the lemon flavor and add extra tartness to the cake.

Banana Pudding Mix – You can use banana pudding mix to take chocolate or vanilla cake up a notch for a fun and flavorful twist.

Protein Pudding Mix – One fun way to make your cake just a tad bit healthier is to use a protein pudding mix to add moisture along with a boost of protein to your pudding.

When it comes to taste, it’s not just the flavor combinations that matter but also the texture. These pudding mix-infused cakes are incredibly tender and add a satiating moistness. It’s a game-changer, swapping a dry, crumbled piece for a silky, soft spoonful.

Here’s a tip to ensure a perfect bake for any cake – avoid overmixing. Stir the ingredients just until combined. Mixing the batter too much can make the cake tough rather than tender because you are fully activating the baking soda before it can create those delectable air pockets that leave a moist fluffy cake.

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned baker, experimenting with different cake and pudding mixes not only improves the texture and taste of your cakes but also adds an exciting twist to your regular baking routine.

How to Use Pudding Mix to Improve a Cheap Boxed Cake Mix

Use this simple trip to improve the texture of any cheap cake mix or homemade recipe and even add fun new flavor twists.

Boxed cake mixes can be a convenient and affordable option for busy moms, but they can also lack the flavor and moistness of homemade cakes. By adding pudding mix to a cheap boxed cake mix, you can instantly upgrade the flavor and texture of the cake. Here’s how to do it:

:: Choose a boxed cake mix of your choice and a corresponding flavor of instant pudding mix.

:: Prepare the cake mix according to the instructions on the box, but before adding the eggs, oil, and water, add the instant pudding mix to the dry cake mix and stir well.

:: Once you’ve added the pudding mix, follow the rest of the instructions on the box as usual. You’ll notice that the batter is thicker and creamier than usual, but that’s a good thing – it means your cake will be extra moist and delicious!

:: When the cake is done baking, let it cool completely before frosting it. You can use any frosting you like, but I recommend a homemade buttercream, whipped cream frosting or cream cheese frosting to complement the creamy texture of the cake.

Adding pudding mix to cake mix is a simple and delicious way to elevate your baking game. It’s a perfect solution for busy moms who want to make a homemade dessert but don’t have a lot of time to spare. By using the best pudding mixes and following these simple steps, you can make a moist and flavorful cake that will impress your family and friends.

The next time you’re in a rush to bake a cake for a kid’s birthday or just for fun make sure to grab a box of pudding mix while you are at it.
